Fonts
What fonts are available through a Monotype Fonts subscription?
All plans offer access to the entire Monotype Library of over 150,000 high-quality, award-winning fonts and the most up-to-date collections from the world’s best foundries and type designers.
This includes iconic workhorses like Helvetica Now and Futura Now to modern designs such as Macklin and Cotford. All of our fonts are ready to use, with complete information about glyph and language support, so you know what you’re getting from the start.
Plus, we’re constantly adding new fonts to our inventory to provide you with as many options as possible.
How can I find a specific font/the best font for my needs?
Use one of the many Monotype Fonts features for a successful and efficient font search.
Our powerful search engine and its advanced search filters sort through the fonts in the Monotype Library as well as any previously purchased fonts that you have imported. You can find fonts by name or family, or search for your favorite foundry or designer.
Monotype Tags are built using AI technology that maps specific typographic features to different moods and descriptors, ensuring that you get accurate search results.
You can further refine your search results using stackable filters or the similarity engine. You can filter results by:
- Style (e.g. serif, sans serif)
- Visual properties (e.g. weight, width)
- Typographic features (e.g., Ligatures, Fractions, Shaping, Spacing etc.)
- Language support
- Foundry
- Source (Monotype Fonts or Imported Fonts)
What if a font isn’t available in the Monotype Library?
While we try our best to maintain the most extensive, up-to-date type library, new fonts are created and released daily, so there is always a chance we might not have the font you need. However, the Monotype Fonts “similar font” feature does a great job of suggesting typeface alternatives.
You can also contact our support team at [email protected] and we’ll do our best to help bring you the fonts you need.
What are web fonts, and why should I use them?
Web fonts are designed for online displays, such as websites and digital ads. They render cleanly, regardless of device resolution or pixel density, and ensure your project loads quickly and consistently everywhere your content is seen, i.e., browsers, operating systems, and devices. And even if layouts (or ideas) change, web fonts allow text to automatically re-flow to guarantee they appear as intended.
How can I create a video with fonts without having to download them?
Use the Monotype Desktop App to instantly sync the fonts you need to your design tools without having to download the font files.
Production Fonts/Licensing
How does Monotype Fonts make font licensing easier?
Monotype Fonts streamlines font licensing by completing the paperwork for you. With a Monotype Fonts subscription, your work is under one license, which makes licensing gaps easier.
What are production fonts, and how many of them can I use?
Production fonts are the fonts you use commercially. These are not the fonts used in mock-ups or pitch decks. Every Monotype Fonts subscription allots you a certain number of production fonts, which are linked to the distribution rights that you purchase with your plan. You may deploy as many production fonts as your plan allows; for instance, the Create + Deploy plan comes with 10 production fonts. Additional production fonts are available for purchase.
What is font tiering?
Font tiering is Monotype’s unique approach to categorize our vast and expanding font inventory. This approach helps improve identification of the type of font that is used by our customers (such as standard, variable, or CCJK).
All the fonts on Monotype Fonts are structured based on the following tiers:
- Standard - These fonts are counted as one production font when used commercially.
- Variable - These fonts are counted as five production font when used commercially. A variable font is a single font file that can store a continuous range of font style variations (with such as different widths, weights, or sizes).
- CCJK - The production font count of CCJK fonts can be more than one. CCJK font tier includes the fonts that support the character sets used in Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, or Korean languages. Using Monotype Fonts subsetting capability, you can further enhance web page performance with CCJK fonts.
Do I need to use production fonts for client websites?
Yes, you need to use production fonts for client websites. For those using fonts for client websites, we suggest the Create + Deploy plan which includes 10 production fonts, with more available as add-ons. We recommend the Create + Pitch plan to designers, freelancers, and agencies working on behalf of clients.
What does unlimited experimenting mean?
Unlimited experimenting means all users are allowed to access and use any typeface from the library for non-commercial use. Creatives are free to use as many fonts as they need to design mockups, pitch decks, and prototypes.
By contrast, production fonts can be distributed commercially. Here are some of the ways you can deploy these fonts:
- Desktop
- Cloud asset management systems
- Web fonts
- Applications
- Servers
- Digital ads
Are desktop rights included in Monotype Fonts subscriptions?
No, desktop rights are not included in Monotype Fonts subscriptions. However, you can use the fonts to create mockups, pitch decks, and prototypes. You can even share documents internally. Only once you need to distribute a font commercially will you need to secure the appropriate desktop rights.
Do I need to use production fonts for commercial material?
Yes, you need to use production fonts for commercial material. For those using fonts for commercial material, we suggest the Create + Deploy plan which includes 10 production fonts, with more available as add-ons. We recommend the Create + Pitch plan to designers, freelancers, and agencies working on behalf of clients.
Can I test fonts without using my production font allotment?
Yes, you can test fonts in any environment and create as many mock-ups and pitch decks as you’d like, as long as you do not deploy them commercially. Fonts deployed for commercial purposes are considered production fonts. For those looking to publish work, we suggest the Create + Deploy plan which includes 10 production fonts, with more available as add-ons. We recommend the Create + Pitch plan to designers, freelancers, and agencies working on behalf of clients.
